特徴
「個人名（nom）＋姓（Nom de famille）」の順で、個人名が2個以上ある場合は、ほとんど1番目の個人名を日常生活で使用する。他の名前は、出生や結婚時の公文書に記すのみである。大多数の個人名は、カトリックの聖者の名を持つ。ただし、ブルターニュやコルシカ島では、聖者によらない個人名を使用する場合がある。

姓については、フランス語は方言の異形が数多くあったため多様である。1880年の『家族の重大な記録の小冊子』には40以上の異形の例がある。フランスの研究機関 Statistics INSEE によると1891年から1990年に1,300,000以上の姓の登録あり、およそ200,000の姓が消滅した。1990年以降での姓数は1,200,000から800,000と推定している。そして、約80%は国勢調査時で50人未満の稀な姓である。

結婚後の女性に関しては、2005年1月1日より欧州会議の1978年の宣言に同意して父の姓を使用する意外にハイフンの挿入が可能となった。
